2.5" drill pipe is around 6.5+ pound per ft and very strong! It should work for any thing you may want to lift in compression in the A-Frame. No couplings due to the length of it. That stuff is stronger than the frame so I see no flexing problems. You need to calculate the pull on the chains or cables for sizing on the A-Frame Supports along with the attachment points if they are high then you need to figure in leverage on the mounts not just shear so they don't buckle. You can get larger steel tube for going over the top and make your pulley point at the top. Then you can tear it down into lighter sections. Sounds like a fun project to do. I have spent a few hours poking around and there is lots of stuff on the net to calculate all this for a 3 to 1 safety ratio.
