I've got a vintage Clark 5 speed trans that I'm thinking about putting in my WC59. Before I invest in the work to adapt it to my Dodge bellhousing, I'd like the evaluate the possibility of a PTO to run the winch.
How would you measure the gears to determine if a PTO is compatible?
The Clark trans had a PTO on the passenger side when I got it. I tried moving it to the driver side, and the gears seem to mesh ok, but I note that the gear it's running off is not identical to the gear on the other side. How can I verify that "seems ok" is actually correct?
If the gears do fit, the PTO shaft is headed aft instead of forward. There appears to be quite a bit of symmetry in the PTO housing. I might see if I can reassemble it with a forward-pointing shaft. Has anybody done an operation like that?
Even if the gear fits and the shaft can be pointed forward, that PTO does not have a reverse speed, like the WC and PW PTO. I tend to think a PTO winch with power in only would be relegated to ornamental purposes only, and might even be a liability in use.
I have a WC PTO. The gear does not protrude enough to mesh with the Clark transmission. I can't imagine any way to adapt that. Do any of the later Dodge PTOs come with a gear that sticks out more? How far? What is the gear profile?
Are there other reversible PTOs out there? What should I measure on my Clark trans so I know what I'm looking for?
