So I finally decided today to tackle the stripped and leaking studs that hold the third member on the axle case. As some of you remember i got a centered rear axle and have 4.89s so the stud holes had to be drilled out to take the larger stud. When i put some of the studs in, they stripped the threads and leak oil.
So today I took the third member out. Not the quandary. Do I helicoil the ones stripped, which of course is almost all the studs below the oil line. Or any other suggestions.
Also, I run 85/140 gear oil in the rear axle. Seems like it leaks quite a bit from the axle case gaskets too. Is using a silicone or gasket maker advisable? I know there must be an offset for the 4.89 to have the right gap, but can I use the three gaskets and then a tube of gasket maker to help seal it?
