Thanks Kaegi for the suggestions: bellhousing alignment pins drove back easily, I used a long needle nose pliers to put on the washers, a long box wrench ground down to slip out after tightening the nuts, and duct tape to keep the nuts in the wrench. I switched from split washers to shake proof star washers because they are thinner.
