I had my dist re-curved at the Dyno Shop I used to work at 35 years ago. Their distributor machine was buried- everything is digital these days. I don't know what weight/tire diamter/gearing he used, but curve was waaaay off. What a ping box. So with a tach and a dial timing light, I redid it. Probably had the dist in and out 20 times between test drives up the steepest hill in the neighborhood. And ended up with a curve like ummm I think a Plymouth car. I don't know where I got the info.
Too much vaccuum advance will ping for a second when you stomp on it, then go away as the vaccuum in the unit bleeds away. Old units had a fitting with the vac nipple, unscrew it and change shims. Later ones are a hex shaped stamping. The hex has a nut inside, use a small allen wrench in the nipple to adjust it. IIRC, I had a hex/allen one, but also needed to weld a stop to the rod to limit stroke. Them flatties with the funky shaped combustion chamber need odd advance curves.
