Give it a blast from an unlit propane torch, or an inert gas from whichever welder is handy, or C)2 from your keg dispenser.
On the other hand, the urethan spar varnish left from my bed boards has been gelled for years. It's an excellent gun stock finish. Hand rub like oil, hang it up high in the heated house to cure. Rub it down with a soft rag later that day, then one more coat the next. Nice matte finish.
Pretty nice piece of walnut, from right next to a knot in a piece out of the bin at the local hard wood store. Cost all of $19, and I still have some nice stuff from the other side of the knot. Hand gun grips maybe? About 10 hours work.
