Clint,
We have a similar setup at work. We use a laser to cut steel parts, always starting with a CAD file in a DXF or DWG format. We import that drawing into the laser CNC software, then add details such as where to pierce the steel when starting a cut, what direction to cut in, what order to cut parts, and most important - the software helps layout all of the parts on a sheet to minimize waste. They call it "nesting". We usually add some commonly needed parts to fill in unused space on a sheet.
