I built these 2 Tanning Drums for my Daughter. They weight several hundred pounds and turn on 1 1/2" steel shafts at 19 RPMs. At that speed the leather hides will almost get to the top and drop in the drum to soften the leather. One is to oil the hides and the other is to fluff the hides plus soften the leather. Any faster it will not drop and slower they just roll the hides. Now you put several hundred pounds of hides in them to spin for a few hours. I turn these 6 ft tall 4 ft across drums both at the same time with a 1760 RPM 5 HP motor. I use a single 1/2" wide fan belt off a pulley sized to reduce the speed thru a ear box driving 2 fan belts on each drum to turn both of them at the same time. If 5 HP can turn these drums weighing around 500+ lbs at 19 RPMs I am sure a PW PTO can run a snow blower off it. A slip clutch can absorb shock and give a little like the belts do. There is 8 sheets of 3/4" on the plywood ends, 5 sheets of 1/4" plywood on the outside wrap along with a bunch of 2x6s just in the drums for weight not counting what goes in them. I did my math and figured it out. They have been working for around 9 years now and I have replaced 2 belts and one cheap aluminum pulley that got loose.
