With the stock ignition I believe it needs to be set at 2 degrees BTC. I installed a Pertronix in the 230 we rebuilt earlier this year and I had to run it closer to 6 degrees BTC to make it run well. You certainly don't want the engine firing after it is at TDC. Don't get too hung up on the timing light reading, I really believe it is more of a suggested starting point.
