the best bang for your buck in a dodge diesel, is to get an unmolested 5.9, as late or early as you like, and then make front end upgrades to manual hubs and upgraded components. i believe the sweet spot is the 5.9s right before the change over to the 6.7 as you can find them rust free and low mileage. i did the first gen thing. great truck, but not suited for the high speed highway travel i do. i've reevaluated my need and will keep my 3500 megacab and go with a gmc product for everyday commuting.
