The port with branch line to Whitter was put in during WWII. The military wanted another deep water/ice free port besides Seward. And yes the rumor of a road into Whitter is now a reallity. It's run as a toll road. Feel free to ask any other questions about the Alaska Railroad, I work for the ARRC. Robert
