Brakes...master cyl

anyone who can help,
My 1962 wm300 is not quite roadworthy. There is currently a heater core hose being used as a master cyl filler tube with a large boltt for a cap. I bled the brakes and got a pedal for a short time. Is this correct or is there a steel tube with a locking cap? The master probaly needs rebuilding, but that is not the issue here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated
