I chased an overheating problem for 6 months to find a pinhole on the radiator tank seam that only let water escape (& air in) when the engine was working hard (going up long grades or pulling a load). At 6 months into it the symptoms were consistant & not sporadic like at the beginning. A cooling system leak down test eventually nailed it, but not at the beginning. It was a fairly new rebuilt radiator to boot! I couldn't find the leak by looking at the different components cause the water/antifreeze would vaporize immediately and leave to trace of leakage. The water loss per 1k miles was negligable, but (180 T-Stat) the temp guage needle would climb to 210-220-230 and that was frustrating. Turning on the heater when it's 90 plus degrees outside was NO fun. All is well at 180 now & under loads rarely climb past 190. It [only] cost $400 for the new radiator (no more rebuilds for me). Thanks!
