The pointer is not directly above the crank pulley. It is angled over towards the driver side of the truck. You can get in there at the correct angle with a timing light. FYI. if your truck is 6-volt you can still use a 12-volt timing light. The 12-volt battery does not have to be in the same vehicle as the engine you are timing. Also can run the timing light from a battery charger.
