Slow growing tree and very dense/heavy. Great heat value for firewood. They used a lot of it for barn beam construction in the early days. Don't try to drive a nail in it though as we normally have to predrill and drop the tips in a bucket of oil. Very strong stuff but not very water resistant. Bigger trees tend to break the tops then hollow out. No relation to maple that I know off and easy to tell them because of the smooth, gray bark.
