A good battery tender does work, but many of the cheaper ones will cook a battery long term. I had a battery explode because of a maintainer.
The optima is a good battery, but I bought an Optima once for the same reason, it can sit for up to 12 months with almost no voltage loss when disconnected and I needed the car to sit for 7 without the ability to check on it.
Biggest downside is that you are supposed to use a special charger for them because they behave a little differently than a conventional battery and want a more automotive like charging cycle.
