Try opening closing the points with a insulated screwdriver with a high tension lead connected to a spark plug . Make a bit of a jury rig show with the distributor cover off, use automotive high tension leads.
So your aliminatiing the cap rotor and distributor cap. I once had a rotor with a perfectly burnt hole through to the metal portion of the distributor shaft.
You need to make sure your ignition coil is functioning first.
