Notice the DIN 470 diagram showing the larger radius on the tool? That makes sure the center of the plug gets whacked too. I've never seen a tool, you would need one for every size. A good whack should flatten out the center.
I suppose "show quality" might mean making a tool per that sketch.
What does NOT work is to make a nice neat concave dimple, like with a ball peen hammer. The dimple actually pulls the O.D. inwards, leaving the plug loose. Pretty, but ineffectual.
Even with a non-pressure cap, the water pump will make 10 psi. You do want the plugs to stay in. The feel out on my '53 first time I hit the freeway. Somebody else was a bit too delicate.
