The one short set I got are tapered on the bottom! Tested drilling on some plate and if I drilled a 3/8" hole first then a 15/16" bit part way into the 3/16" steel I could almost get them flat. It would take around a 1 1/4" bit to counter sink them just about flush making a cone for them to fit into that would make them work. SO I think I will go with the large head carriage bolts and just let the rounded head stick up some. I would have to take to much metal out for the taper and it might allow movement later on? Darn so now I got to buy more/different right bolts!!!
