I've sure seen a LOT of rusted out steel plugs, and hardly any brass ones corroded away. ONE, I think.
According to a galvanic chart, mild steel will be sacrificial to cast iron. Where as brass is a long ways away, the block will rust away first. So, use 1/16" thick steel plugs to protect a 200 pound iron block, or use a 200 iron block to protect brass plugs that will last forever?
Added note- those "aluminum" water outlets used on practically every engine for decades are actually sacrificial zinc. Used to corrode away to prevent the steel OE plugs from rusting.
I've saved a steel distribution tube. It's in reusable condition. But next time I need one I'm going to make a copper repro by slitting a section of 1 1/2" water pipe.
