What I meant by hand was, that with the engine not running, I unlock the drum and while turning the drum with one hand, I'm using my other hand like a roller fairlead to guide the cable onto the drum. Like I said, it's quite the work out for the hands and wrists.
As for using gloves, thanks to a good pair of leather work gloves I still have both of my thumbs. Years ago while in the military on one occasion while working with the main winch cable for a tracked recovery vehicle (the M88A1) the cable kinked right where my thumb was. Except for feeling sore for a few minutes, there was no damage to my thumb.
Cable of any size and type is like a handy man jack. It's a good thing to have, but one needs to be aware of the possible dangers that come with it.
