ticks need a warm body to feed on so once a critter is dead and starts to cool down the ticks go looking for something warm to attach to.
Cooling the critter quickly & let it hang a day or 2 and I usually don't have any issues with ticks skinning & butchering deer.
The young ticks (nymphs) are much worse cus you can not see them. They are the size of the period at the end of this sentence.
