I use nylon straps with axle straps all the time but buy the good stuff. I have Macs and they are US made and twice as thick as ones from the farm store. Axle straps have never hurt the brake lines. I have always meant to weld loops on my axles that i could just clip the strap on. Ended up in a steep ditch once (not me driving) and the trailer was practically on two wheels everything held fine. To each there own but no matter how many times i tighten chains whenever i stop they feel loose. Also my understanding is 4 seperate tie downs is the law so you need 4 chains and binders.
To answer your question. Good luck finding tire straps for 36 or larger tires.
