But if that doesn't work - I did the rings/pistons on mine with the engine in the truck. As I recall the worst part was removing the head bolts which broke when I was taking the head off, followed by cleaning the honing grit out of the engine. I was working in the freezing winter - if the weather under your tree is okay, I don't think it would be too bad. The valves seem like they would be a lot worse to do (no experience here).
Note that everything I know about engine building I've learned here, so if your snake-oil/bones waving doesn't help the job isn't too hard. After doing the rings the smoke screen which occurred once the engine warmed up disappeared. I also shimmed the bearings and got my OP up to 10PSI from really low.
