The people I used for a few pieces of chrome on my truck were doing that about 4 years ago. Is this silver nitrate? That's what they were using and the process looks the same. See the link below.
They send all their croming out like most shops do now, they are just the polishers. EPA regs have closed down all the small shops as they are only allowed to have so much hazardous waste per month. When these companies here in Dayton, Holman plating and Dayton wire wheel, have "extra" waste credits, they plate for others. Basically dip only as they don't do the prep work.
That said the owner wanted to do it in house. Said he spent close to $20,000 on the equipment and when I asked about plating a grille on a driver truck they informed me they don't do it for hire anymore as they had so many problems with it. Consistancy and durability were they main issues.
Maybe your guy has perfected it but I'd try one piece before dropping a lot off.
