The following are my comments and opinions on the current fire scenario and do not represent any agency viewpoints.
The current model of wildland firefighting has to change due to the continuing degradation of fire weather and ongoing low levels of humidity throughout the West.
Using hand crews to attempt to contain some wildland fires, particularly on the leading edge of these fires, will result in further and continuous loss of life. The only safe way to operate in these conditions (high winds, extremely dry fuels, and lack of precipitation) is to utilize - where possible - aviation and heavy equipment resources.
Property of any kind IS NOT worth the lives of firefighting personnel under any circumstance except for the immediate threat of death or serious injury to civilians or other firefighters.
