As big as the rock you discribed sounds, I myself, would never have chanced bending my axle housing in such a way unless the chain was close to the springs and not toward the center where a bend would most likely occur.
It is a scary thought, mentally visualizing what it looked like with the chain around the axle pulling on such a huge rock. Everything has its breaking point just as that cheap bolt held right up to a point before it finally gave (without warning I presume)Have you ever notice how many PWs have the frame welded behind the cab,thats because those old PWs are so tough, people forgot they had a limit to what it could take. I am sure you were as careful as you thought necessary but, please don't tell such scary stories ,they give me nightmares.
