It's actually quite possible to get a very reasonable locat1on for TDC just from a length of rod in the hole over the last piston.
It was certainly accurate enough to show me that the markings on the crank had TDC at 12:00 when the pointer on the chain cover was at 11:00, which sent me off looking at my other engines (to find the sheetmetal pointers on their chain cases at 12:00)
Once I'd found that the !"£$%^ pointer was wrong I just set it roughly to 12:00, fired it up, backed it off to about 5o off TDC and then moved the distributor by hand at idle till it started sounding unhappy, then backed it a little and locked it. SInce i use the full original 6v system I needed to compromise a little to get it to start happily as well as run.
