Willy you can flatten a piece of copper pipe to put behind any hole your welding. The weld will not stick to it and you will not blow through it. I either clamp it in place or Cleco it in place. I have done this a lot with thin metal or rust pits. With rust pits it will stop the pit from growing too big. I also use it to weld new metal into rusted edges after I wire wheel it. It allows me to weld excess metal to the edge without eating the edge away. Then I can grind it back to its original edge.
