My buddy a 50 year certified GM mechanic always checks for soft rubber collapsed lines first. The brake fluid will push through to the wheel cylinders under foot pressure as the collapse will expand the hose but removing your foot from the pedal takes away the pressure and the collapsed or weak hose will not let the brake fluid now at the wheel cylinder return to the master cylinder.
