It's to avoid breaking a rear axle. Given the known fragility of old Dodge axles under abusive conditions (too much motor, tires too big, etc), I would be careful about that. True, disengaging the hubs accomplishes the same thing, which might be why they didn't come from the factory with disengageable hubs.
