You can usually heat up the ring gear with a oxy-acetylene torch and shift it 1/6 turn. The teeth only dull in three places, where the compression is. I've never done it in-chassis though.
Some vehicles have no chamfer to the teeth, to halp the bendix engage. On those, when you do a clutch, you can heat it up, remove it, and flip it to re-install, so the bendix gets 100% new teeth.
But most often it's the teeth on the bendix.
