Here is the one I use. Standard 540 rpm is perfect. As long as you keep the tip of the screw sharp, the task is pretty much effortless.
Several versions were made of this type by a half dozen or more companies. As Sherman in Idaho mentioned - one attached directly to a rear axle hub on a vehicle. They also made them on a hand cart with a dedicated 5 horse or so engine driving the screw, as a tractor drawbar mount, a direct splined PTO tractor mount, my 3-point tractor version, a version with rollers that you drove up on and a vehicle tire drove the rollers once the wheels were chocked and the vehicle was put into gear, etc.
No more dangerous than working in a machine shop, but common sense was a requirement which seems to be in short supply these days.
