Did they ever use Leather on Hoods?

The canvas strapping material used under the edge of the hood, have they ever used leather before? Mine is rotted off and gone and I know you can get the replacement stuff to. Just was thinking of leather strips cut to fit for under the hoods edge??? I can get the right thickness and oil it and use rivets to hold it on like the old webbing.
