That's good to know. I always thought running too far advanced caused overheating, but too far retarded just caused loss of power and fuel economy. When I used to drive my old Chevy truck back and forth between Idaho and Washington a lot, I would advance the timing on my first tank of Idaho gas and retard it on my first tank of Washington gas, because it would knock easier on Washington gas. I've always sort of figured that the optimum advance is as much as you can get away with without it ever knocking.
