The rear pumpkin has had the carrier bearing mounts removed, the usual ring gear drives the rear pinion. Of course, all the torque has to go through the front ring and pinion, then the rear pinion wears the ring gear too.
Then too, I don't think R&Ps are as good in one direction as the other? The second pinion might be higher friction?
