I've done that too, but there's a metal washer over the seal, then supposedly a second washer and a second seal under that, right now I can't get the metal washer out. The kit came with a new one, but honestly I'd rather re-use the existing one since I know it fits correctly, which means not drilling it out if I can help it.
I'll re-examine the air, looks like you need to turn the shaft so that it allows the fluid/air pressure against the seals. I've also seen it said I can just remove the cap opposite the shaft and it will lift out so I can get to the seals without affecting anything else. It's an option but I'm going to hold that one as a backup option too since then I'd be creating another potential leak source.
