As others have mentioned, most likely a bad connection on one of the main cables (bat or ground. I have usually troubleshot these things without any tools just by having someone turn the key to "start" while I look under the hood first for sparks at a connection, then for connections that feel hot, and lastly try wiggling all connections while the key is in the "start" position. I can get fancy with a volt-meter, but very often the problem becomes clear with those very simple tests. The key is to have someone else turn the key to "start".
