I have worked with many different sawmills. Yes, the home made sawmills might work OK, but it all depends on what the final objective is. If you just have have a FEW logs to saw most any simple might do the job. However if you are undertaking sawing lumber for a construction project, the home made mills will just not cut it. Of all the mills that I have worked with the Timber King mills (a band mill) are the ones that I have found to be the top of the line. The mills that use a chainsaw blade or a circular saw take a 1/4" kerf. A band mill takes only 1/16" kerf. The band mill does a much better job of sawing and wastes less wood. When considering a sawmill you must consider your final objective: How much lumber do you intend to saw, would it be cheaper to buy the lumber you need, can you find some one local to saw your logs instead, can you purchase a quality band mill and do the sawing that you need for your self and then do custom saw milling and pay for the sawmill?? I have a friend that purchased a band mill and I help him saw logs quite frequently. He has paid for his mill doing custom work. He has also sold lumber grown on his property that he sawed. It is a question of many considerations that you must answer for your particular situation. PW content: My friend and I have sawed some nice lumber for PW beds!
