My dad, who was a firefighter since the 40's says that the heaters and defrosters weren't too great then so it was easier to look over the winshield at times plus you could get a really good look around when approaching the fire in any kind of weather. But of course it was bitter cold in bad weather. Mostly it was a style thing for the era, but safety is no. 1 now. No more rding on the back step either.
