carb rebuilding

I finally picked up a new manifold for my 55 power wagon(thanks Kevin) and now the task of getting the old girl running again, for the first time in twenty years.I ordered a carb kit today and noticed an excesive amount of play in the shaft for the throttle.How much play is normal if this is a problem can the carb be saved?
