The PTO which was located on the transmissions was design to provide power to both the front and rear of the truck. The front normally went to a winch. The rear went to a belt pully on the back where you could run many farm type devices and implements. This was not done too often from what people have said. Fred Colwell in Colorado seems to be the "expert" on the belt pully. The rear PTO output was also used to drive bed mounted winches or pumps on some fire trucks.
