I had a 12000 GVW trailer built but had it rated at 10000 becuae in California anything over 10000 you have to get a non-commercial class A license. I thought for the very few times I would be over 10000 GVW I would take the chance not having one.
The trailer I had before that was just your basic Big Tex car hauler. I'm sure that at some point it was going to just collapse under the Power Wagon. What a difference with this heavy duty one.
As far as how to: get a trailer that is rated for what your going to haul,(a trailer that is rated for a little more than what your going to haul wouldn't hurt), dual axles with brakes on all four wheels, I told the manufacturer to make it as wide as legally possible, pay a visit to your local highway patrol or motor vehicles and find out what is the legal way top strap it down. There is a four point law here in California, meaning the load has to be tied down on all four corners. I ordered some eight foot tie down straps rated at 10000 pounds each from a mail order speed equipment magazine.
I guess I'm not a purist because if I have to go more than about 10 miles on these California freeways, I would just a soon trialer it.
