Winch handle bolts, drill out for 5/16"?

Sooo many have broken bolts and missing handles that I figure they need all the help they can get. 5/16 is probably twice as strong as 1/4.

But you had the pivot but not the handle?

So far as paint, how about gun bluing instead? Put them in a jar, add some bluing, shake it around?
