Sid Beck, a highly respected friend, recommended DOT 5. That surprised me coming from an award winning guy with a zeal for originality. So, I respect the DOT 5 guys. Personally, I use DOT 3 or 4. They are both synthetic, but all DOT 3 & 4 are synthetic; there is no such thing as a non-synthetic brake fluid; its a marketing thing to use that word. My preference for the DOT 3 or 4 is that they absorb moisture. They are supposed to absorb moisture. As I understand it, moisture will get into the system. If the brake fluid does not absorb it like a sponge, the moisture will pool in the low spot of the system and rust. The beauty of DOT 3/4 is that with regular (yearly) flushing, the moisture is evacuated from the system with the contaminated fluid, and replaced with clean fluid ready to do its job for another year. I don't know if all of this is true or not, but the regular maintenance keeps me happy. I think it keeps my brake system happy, too.
