My dad was a Naval aviator in WWII flying PBMs and PBYs. He was one of the last in his squadron to leave after the end of the war. He told me they didn't have pilots to fly all the remaining aircraft back to the States, so they towed the extra aircraft out into open water and sunk them. I think that was typical with a lot of extra equipment.
