I would not recommend mixing color with clear to get a single stage look. if you want a single stage look then use a single stage. there is a reason the paint manufacturer doesn't mix them.I use single stage and basecoat /clearcoat and not being an expert, I find following the directions very helpful. just my 2 cents.
