Sherman, you are correct, knurling was a cheap option to get more life out of a piston. The knobs raised by the knurl on the piston would then be machined for a fairly tight fit in the bore. A few thousand miles of running would have the knobs starting to flatten out again. Some pistons would be so tight as to nip up on the cylinder walls, not enough to seize, but enough to leave vertical score on the piston.
