The problem with drums is heat. Heat causes significant brake fade in drums and not with disks.
I replaced my front drums after going through an inspection with my PW. I had a yard of dirt in the back. I was coming down a slight hill and started slowing down early. The brakes faded badly and I managed to stop just on the other side of the intersection. Yes the brakes were in good shape and adjusted correctly.
Disks do not seem to fade.
