My Dad has cast parts using silicon bronze with good results, but it was a lot of work.
Lately, he has been making castings using babbitt material. It is very easy to work with.
He never made much using aluminum. I seem to recall they were nervous about molten aluminum exploding if there was moisture contamination in their molds. I got the impression aluminum took more of a professional setup than they were using.
